FAMINE IN KENYA: PROACTIVE MEASURES TAKEN BY THE HOLY FAMILY PARISH, KIEMBENI

Written by colprocmis Category:

Help needed for drought victims in Isiolo , Ngaremara, Kenya. There is no food and water for human beings and animals to people who are entirely pastoralists. The drought took different twists this time and our parishioners are facing severe food and water shortage in many parts. Many are indeed suffering.

The 25th General chapter put emphasis on the words that gives hope to those working in such areas and to the people they are ministering to" We are Missionaries" and as missionaries we truly need to insert ourselves fully  in the joy and sorrow of our people. As the drought persists, many of our missionaries working here in East Africa, friends and well-wishers have made some humanitarian interventions through the delegation Mission procure  and have send food items and other ways of ensuring that the basic commodity namely water could be made available to  some places.

We still appeal to all people of good will to join hands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters here in Ngaremara in order to save lives of human beings and of course of livestock that they depend on for their livelihood. But even in the midst of all these challenges and because we are missionaries we should not succumb and jeopardize the new relationships brought by Jesus Christ. This will help us to have a personal encounter with the saving love of Jesus

Ngaremara Catholic Mission is about 20kms from Isiolo town, the county headquarters it covers an area of 40 miles wide and 50 miles long. Is a sub county in Isiolo north with a population of approximately 8000 people. It has four out stations namely Ngaremara, Daaba, Erimet and Chumyere. Ngaremara Mission is one of missions of the Catholic Diocese of Isiolo. It belongs to the arid and semi-arid regions of Kenya. It is marked by extreme weather condition of draught and is one of the poorest. The causes of this poverty are: frequent severe draught, inadequate water for domestic and non-domestic, low agricultural production due to harsh climatic conditions, over dependency on relief food and livestock economy, unutilized resources, insecurity, conflicts which include ethnic clashes, illiteracy and poor infrastructure.

PROACTIVE MEASURES TAKEN BY THE HOLY FAMILY PARISH, KIEMBENI UNDER STEWARDSHIP OF THE CLARETIAN MISSIONARIES.

It was one sunny Sunday afternoon, when the a group of the Catholic Men Association CMA, arrived the parish station of Mwakirunge, with the sole intention to distribute foodstuffs collected in the main parish, during the three masses celebrated there, this happened on the 26th February, 2017.

This afternoon is especially hot as if to accentuate the famine and drought ravaging this part of Kenya. For the CMA present, each was carrying a bottle of water to quench their thirst at intervals. Sometimes the hot weather in this area can be so high that even the animals cry to the heavens for rain. We hope the rains will come very soon to assuage the plights of this poor community.

The sharing of food items and clothing materials to the famine stricken areas of the Coast region was an idea mooted during the AGM of the whole priests in the diocese in January. Hence, the Holy Family parish in response to this, and for the sake of justice and equity organized its parishioners for this drive of helping out in these famines stricken areas. The major food items distributed were Maize flour, flour for baking, and clothes; all donated by the parishioners and were conveyed in a big truck to Mwakirunge.

Areas affected drastically by the drought in the Coast Region are Mwakirunge, Ribe, Rabai, Kaloleni, Kinango areas, Kwale areas, etc. We as a parish have decided to have this as a monthly exercise of charity to our brothers and sisters in those areas. Next Month April, we shall be taking the same charity to areas of Kaloleni and some parts of Ribe. We pray that the Lord of the harvest will help us in these noble acts.
